My Review of OPENRSM CloudBackup
Product Review - Online Backup - OPENRSM CloudBackup
What is it:
OPENRSM CloudBackup is a service that lets you store files and backup data securely to a nearly unlimited backup to internet vault. Unlike other online backup providers, CloudBackup has no maximum amount of data you can store. You pay a flat fee (which get’s you a BIG datastore) and only pay extra for the actual storage you use in excess of that. It works the same on Windows, MAC, and Linux systems as well.
You can mount the CloudBackup drive as a network disk or with your web browser.), over WebDav or via the local http server. CloudBackups local cache (1GB default) that allows most operations to be instantaneous with all changes made in the background. The builtin backup utility works well and previous versions are kept if desired. This makes CloudBackup suitable for backup as well as temporary file storage or as an remote filesystem since it works with native tools such as robocopy, sync tools such as SyncToy, rsync, etc. Block level incremental backup is supported through CloudBackup.
Best Features:
- New Intuitive User Interface
- Support for connecting to multiple data stores at the same time
- Support for multiple backup jobs with independent scheduling
- Highly configurable bandwidth limiting
- Identical Features and Interface on Windows, MAC, and Linux
- Download verification and in-application reporting
- Unlimited number of computers with a single account
Who it’s for:
Since it’s so versitile, CloudBackup is more than online backup, it’s also a shared data store for any mixture of Windows, MAC, and Linux systems. The interface is easy to use and can be setup as easily (more easily actually) than most other programs. Therefore CloudBackup is designed for novice to expert computer users who are looking for a safe backup solution or to access files remotely without the restrictions offered by competitors. Or, like me… BOTH. For example: All files, folders, data is in full view. Just like having an unlimited sized SAN. You can let the scheduler backup all your changed files if you simply set it, and forget it.
Good Features:
Set it and forget it backups. Set it up to run a backup of folders periodically and you no longer have to worry about harddisk-lifespan or safety of my data. Minimal use of bandwidth. It will updated changed bytes only and use it’s cache as a buffer. So bandwidth use is limited after the first backup. Easy administration but powerful too. Options for versioning backups/files, limiting bandwidth, detailed use logs. You can get dirty if you want but I hardly ever needed to access the manual. Works with your existing software and systems. The network drive is just like having your own unlimited size SAN. I use OpenOffice Impress, Calendar, and my other collaborative software directly over the network drive and it works perfectly. It’s wonderful when you set your application backups to default to it, etc., to use the Network Drive. And it doesn’t make any difference if you have Windows, MAC, or Linux… It’s as simple as this… It just works.
Things to Know:
Depends on your internet connection. Inherent to CloudBackup is your broadband connection. If you have restricted usage limits then CloudBackup might push it for your first backup cycle. However you can control backup times and limit speed within those or independent time constraints. But, with efficient bandwidth utilization and upload speed limits this isn’t an issue. It has to be said I guess I’m always open to do nearly the same for cheaper or free. CloudBackup is priced for economy while sporting features others just don’t have.
Why I think you need it:
It’s one of the best solutions for painless backup and accessing files, documents, photos, etc. from anywhere. Together, it’s a combination that kills. Add in the security and flexibility and I have to heartily recommend it. Paying a small monthly fee to have his peace of mind is worth it for me.
How it Stacks Up:
- OPENRSM CloudBackup has more space and reliability than a local backup.
- Files are still available for all processes with full functionality unlike other solutions.
- The backup to internet functionality works as good as local backup solutions.
- You can use your existing backup or sync software or use the native backup from every five minute to once a week.
Conclusions:
CloudBackup is a cost effective data storage solution that’s secure, powerful, and flexible. I have to reccommend it unless your on a horribly slow connection to the internet or your data isn’t important to you. Solutions that do half the job for less might be available but I havn’t found them. CloudBackup just works for both business and personal use.
